Savings accounts

  • Money deposited in these accounts bears interest at a rate and on a maximum amount that are either determined by the French government (in the case of regulated 'Livret A' accounts) or by the bank. In either case, your savings are always available and you can make deposits or withdrawals anytime at no expense. The minimum deposit amount is generally 10 or 15 euros, which is also the minimum amount necessary to keep the account open.
  • Interests are calculated every 15 days and recorded for tax purposes on December 31st. It is therefore better to make deposits on the 15th or the 30th of each month, and withdrawals on the 1st or 16th.
  • Interests on savings account not regulated by the government are subject to social-security taxes and/or personal income tax, while interests on government-regulated accounts are not taxable and are therefore net of tax.
