Means of payment security
Do you sometimes hesitate to make online purchases with your bank card? Your mobile phone will soon become an essential tool for adding security to your transactions. With a view to ensuring optimal protection against fraud, Barclays has introduced a mandatory online payment verification system to ensure the bank card is being used by its real owner.
Since July 2010, customers have been required to use this free service when making an online payment to a merchant who is a member in this new network (look for the "Verified by VISA" or "MasterCard SecureCode" logo to identify them).

the principle behind this 3D-Secure system is that with each online transaction, the customer will be asked to enter not just the bank card number, its expiry date and the last three numbers on the back of the card, but also information that is independent of this card. This system is better at identifying cardholders during online transactions.
There are two steps in this payment process:
Step 1: you follow the usual procedure of entering your bank card number, its expiry date and the last three digits of the number on the back of your card.
Step 2: on a new screen, you also enter a unique code that is sent to your mobile phone in a text message during the transaction. Your payment cannot be completed unless you enter this code.
This mandatory verification process has been in use since 1 July 2010. Failure to enter the security code will result in a cancellation of the transaction. Of course, this verification window will not appear for transactions made via the websites of merchants who are not part of this programme.
To be able to make online payments with this new system, you must first provide us with the number of the mobile phone on which you wish to receive the security codes that will be sent to you for each transaction.
For this purpose, please complete and return the reply card downloadable here and return it to us. Alternatively, contact your Barclays relationship manager who can provide you with any information you require about this new procedure.
